13: A Canadian friend contacted me recently about a fine young
man he knows, named Bradley Fischer. Brad is ten years old and has some
serious health issues. My friend asked if I could make a faux magazine
poster for him, to help boost his morale.My friend said he had some pictures of Bradley, taken at a kart track earlier this year. He knows about FauxCovers, the magazine covers and posters I create based on realism and/or fantasy, and thought that one made especially for Brad might cheer him along in his illness. I told him I just needed some clear images and a few story line ideas. About a week went by without hearing anything further. Then an email brought the images needed for the cover and a few story headline ideas.The poster was designed and sent over the Internet to the printer that same day, a retailer near my friend's Ontario home. It was presented to the young lad earlier this week, and I was told it pleased him to see his name and stories in print, on a "national magazine." Brad understood it was just make-believe, but it was still something that made him happy. My friend sent along a picture of the two of them with the 18x24-inch poster. Brad was grinning with pleasure. That's all the payment I would accept, to have helped make a day a little better for the youngster. The cover features images of Bradley driving a competitive kart on a Canadian race track, with made-up headlines for stories about his racing exploits and adventures. He looked like he was having a good time. He's a real trooper, teaching many of us about the challenges of life's real race against time and potential.
